The Importance of Heel Prick Tests Explained to Students

A presentation was delivered to the Medical Laboratory Techniques Program students on the significance of heel prick tests conducted during the newborn period.

In the presentation given by Lecturer Alican Bahadır Semerci, it was emphasized that heel prick testing is one of the most important screening procedures performed on newborns after birth. Students were informed that through a few drops of blood taken from the baby’s heel, various metabolic, hormonal, and genetic disorders can be detected at an early stage.

The presentation highlighted that the purpose of the heel prick test is to identify treatable diseases which, if not diagnosed early, may lead to serious health problems.

Additionally, attention was drawn to the importance of raising awareness among students as future parents and healthcare professionals about the significance of early diagnosis and newborn screening.
