History of Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education

In the spring of 1962, the Ministry of National Education decided to establish an Education Institute in Konya. In July, the dormitory buildings of the Education Association1 were rented for two years for the use of the Konya Education Institute. The Konya Education Institute began its educational activities on November 12, 1962, during the 1962–1963 academic year. The official opening ceremony, attended by the Minister of National Education, was held on November 24. Shortly after its opening, the institution's name was changed to “Selçuk Education Institute.” The two-year institute, which had Science and Literature departments, was dedicated to training middle and high school teachers. In the 1965–1966 academic year, the school moved into its newly constructed building in Meram2. By the 1966–1967 academic year, the school expanded into four departments: Science and Nature, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Turkish Language. In the 1967–1968 academic year, the duration of study was extended to three years. Additionally, in the 1973–1974 academic year, evening classes were introduced for the Science and Nature, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Turkish Language departments. In the 1974–1975 academic year, a Distance Education Program was initiated, though it was discontinued by the 1978–1979 academic year. Starting from the 1979–1980 academic year, the duration of education was increased to four years. In the 1980–1981 academic year, the name Selçuk Education Institute was changed to Selçuk Higher Teacher Training School. Under the Higher Education Law No. 2547 and the Decree Law No. 41 dated July 20, 1982, Selçuk Higher Teacher Training School was transformed into the Faculty of Education under Selçuk University, becoming Selçuk University Faculty of Education. Additionally, the Foreign Languages High Schools in Konya, Isparta, and Antalya were incorporated into the Faculty of Education’s related departments, while Niğde Education High School and Konya Girls’ Vocational Education High School were also affiliated with it. The school’s teaching staff positions were converted into lecturer positions. By the decision of the Council of Ministers on June 24, 2008, the name of the Faculty was changed to Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education. Following Law No. 6005, it was incorporated into Konya University on December 27, 2011, by the Council of Ministers’ decision. Accordingly, the Faculty’s name became Konya University Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education. Later, with Law No. 6287, on April 11, 2012, the name of Konya University was changed to Necmettin Erbakan University. Thus, our Faculty acquired its current name: Necmettin Erbakan University Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education.
