In the spring of 1962, the Ministry of National Education decided to establish an Education Institute in Konya. In July of the same year, the dormitory buildings of the Education Association[1] were rented for two years for the use of the Konya Education Institute. The institute officially began its educational activities on November 12, 1962, during the 1962-1963 academic year. Its official opening ceremony, attended by the Minister of National Education, was held on November 24. Shortly after its opening, the institute’s name was changed to “Selçuk Education Institute.” The institute, which had departments in Science and Literature and trained middle and high school teachers, was a two-year institution. In the 1965-1966 academic year, it moved to a newly constructed building in Meram.[2] During the 1966-1967 academic year, the institute expanded into four departments: “Science and Nature,” Mathematics, Social Studies, and Turkish. In the 1967-1968 academic year, the duration of study was extended to three years. Additionally, in the 1973-1974 academic year, evening programs were introduced for the “Science and Nature,” Mathematics, Social Studies, and Turkish departments.
In the 1974-1975 academic year, a Correspondence Teaching Program was launched, which was later discontinued in the 1978-1979 academic year. Starting from the 1979-1980 academic year, the duration of study was extended to four years. In the 1980-1981 academic year, the Selçuk Education Institute was renamed Selçuk Higher Teacher Training School. In accordance with the Higher Education Law No. 2547, by Decree Law No. 41 dated July 20, 1982, Selçuk Higher Teacher Training School was transformed into the Faculty of Education under Selçuk University, and its name became Selçuk University Faculty of Education. The faculty also incorporated relevant departments from the Konya, Isparta, and Antalya Schools of Foreign Languages and was affiliated with Niğde Education Higher School and Konya Girls’ Art Education Higher School. At the same time, the teaching staff positions were converted into lecturer positions.
By the decision of the Council of Ministers, the Faculty of Education was renamed Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education on June 24, 2008. By Law No. 6005, it was incorporated into Konya University, which had been established on July 21, 2010, by the decision of the Council of Ministers on December 27, 2011, becoming Konya University Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education. With the enactment of Law No. 6287 on April 11, 2012, Konya University was renamed Necmettin Erbakan University, and the faculty acquired its current name.
