Philosophy Department Seminars: An Evaluation of Gilman’s Concept of the ‘Man-Made World

As part of the Philosophy Department Seminars, in her talk titled “An Evaluation of Gilman’s Concept of the ‘Man-Made World’,” Prof. Dr. Sebile Başok Diş discussed Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s ideas through her critique of the “man-made world,” arguing that the social order had been historically constructed in a male-dominated form that systematically subordinated women. She emphasized that, in Gilman’s approach, this condition was not natural but rather a socially constructed relation of power, and she evaluated the exclusion of women from the public sphere, their confinement to the domestic sphere, and the limitation of their opportunities for development as fundamental structural elements criticized by Gilman. In this context, she stated that through these critiques, Gilman demonstrated that womanhood was not a natural destiny but a historically constructed social role, thereby establishing a strong critical foundation within feminist thought.

We would like to thank Prof. Dr. Sebile Başok Diş for her presentation and all participants for their valuable contributions.
