Philosophy Department Seminars: An Evaluation of the First Reception of Existentialism in Turkey within the Framework of Joachim Ritter

Prof. Dr. Feyza Şule Güngör, in her speech, focused on the philosophy of Joachim Ritter, a key figure in introducing existentialism to Turkish academia through his lectures and conferences on the subject at Istanbul University’s Department of Philosophy in the 1950s, as well as through the students he mentored.

Prof. Dr. Güngör examined the initial reception of existentialism’s core theses within the country’s academic circles and the intellectual climate it fostered, situating her discussion within the context of Ritter’s influence. She did so by analyzing Ritter’s reflections on the variability of existentialism and the continuity of philosophia perennis.
