The foundation of the Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education dates back to the Konya Education Institute, established in the 1962–1963 academic year. Renamed Selçuk Education Institute in 1963, the institution initially provided two-year teacher training programs, which were later extended to three years. Over time, the institute offered education in the fields of Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Turkish. In 1978, it was renamed Selçuk Higher Teacher Training School, and in 1982, it was transformed into the Faculty of Education at Selçuk University. With the reforms carried out in the 1990s, the departmental structure was reorganized, and the fields of Geography, History, and Turkish Language and Literature became separate departments. Following the restructuring in 1997, these fields were reorganized as divisions and continued to provide education under different departments. During the same period, the Turkish Language Teaching and Social Studies Teaching programs were also established. Since 2008, the faculty has been named Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education and was later incorporated into Necmettin Erbakan University. With the regulation implemented in the 2014–2015 academic year, the department was renamed the Department of Turkish and Social Sciences Education, and the duration of education was reduced to four years. Today, the department offers education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and its graduates are employed as teachers in institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. As of the 2025–2026 academic year, a total of 742 students are enrolled in the department, and 43 academic staff members continue to carry out educational activities.
