Department of Art History

The Department of Art History was established in 2010. It consists of three main fields of study: General Art History, Turkish-Islamic Arts and Archaeology, and Early Christian and Byzantine Arts. The department aims to train qualified art historians equipped with comprehensive knowledge, capable of providing both theoretical and practical courses within the framework of the prepared curriculum, and able to perform analytical analysis and evaluation, thereby meeting the needs of our country's public and private sectors. The Department of Art History aims to conduct scientific excavations, projects, and research in Konya and other cities of Anatolia, which have continuously hosted numerous civilisations from the Neolithic Age to the present day, and to publish works that introduce our country's historical, cultural, and artistic riches. In this regard, we also aim to contribute to preserving our cultural assets for future generations.  The field of study of the Department of Art History: Art History is a branch of science that studies the material cultural assets created by past civilisations within their historical contexts, from an artistic and aesthetic perspective. The discipline examines elements of material culture according to their materials, techniques, forms, compositions, and styles. The Science of Art History studies aspects of material culture according to their materials, techniques, forms, compositions, and styles. Examining the change and transformation of works of art according to historical events, geography, climatic conditions, and materials analyzes the interactions and exchanges between works of art and reveals regional styles. In this sense, as a natural consequence of being a branch of Social Sciences, it is in close dialogue and exchange of information with the Fine Arts and even the Natural Sciences, as are all Social Sciences with other branches.
