The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics was established within the Faculty of Health Sciences of our University with the letter of the Higher Education Council dated 14.12.2012 and numbered 54412.
The Department of Nutrition and Dietetics provides the assessment of the nutritional status and habits of the society, the improvement of the nutritional level, the search for solutions to the problems arising from nutrition, the determination of the country's food and nutrition plans and policies. In addition, this department provides a training on determining the nutritional needs of different age groups, arranging and applying disease-specific diets.
The department of nutrition and dietetics aims to train health professionals who will create awareness of healthy nutrition in the society in order to prevent diseases that may arise due to nutrition in various fields such as the management and organization of food service in institutions providing social nutrition services.
The dietitian applies the science of nutrition to society and individuals in order to protect, develop and increase the quality of growth, development and lifelong health. Nowadays, malnutrition is the reason of many diseases. In developed countries is common obesity caused by overnutrition, instead in developing and economically underdeveloped countries are common diseases caused by inadequate or unbalanced nutrition. Dietitians have great duties to prevent and treat health problems before they occur.
The main purpose of the Nutrition and Dietetics Program is to provide Nutrition and Dietetics education at the undergraduate level in accordance with the qualifications specified in the framework of national and international norms, to conduct research based on science and technology, and to provide consultancy services in order to ensure adequate and balanced nutrition, protection of health, and increase the quality of life based on nutrition throughout life.
The work area of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics is a systematic, team-based program with the cooperation of many disciplines. A dietitian is a person who has completed at least 4 years of Nutrition and Dietetics education and training program of any health-related higher education institution and is entitled to work as a dietitian after obtaining the "Nutrition and Dietetics Undergraduate Diploma".
This profession was first standardized with the code 0.69 in the occupational classification made by the ILO (International Labour Organization) in 1961, and with the code 32.23 in 1988.
Dietitians can take part in every step of preventive, therapeutic and rehabilitative health services. In addition to being an academician, dietitians take part in the preparation and execution of nutrition programs in children's and elderly nursing homes, food factories, sports health centres, special nutrition-diet centres, food-pharmaceutical industry.
