Department of Public Health

History

The Public Health Department was established in 1982 by establishment of Faculty of Medicine at the University of Selçuk. The founder of the department was Prof. Dr. Orhan DEMİRELİ, who was also the first physician-in-chief of the Faculty of Medicine Hospital. Since April 2012, our department has been providing health services under the Necmettin Erbakan University Meram Faculty of Medicine.

Besides giving lectures at the Faculty of Medicine, we had been teaching at the Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Vocational Education, School of Health, Vocational School of Health Services and Graduate School of Health Sciences. In addition, at the graduate level we started to give masters degree in 1986. In 1988, we also started speciality training program in public health for medical doctors. Our first specialist, Dr. Tahir Kemal ŞAHİN, has been still working as professor and the department head. In 1993, we started to give PhD degree. Within 1996-2012, 9 people were graduated as public health specialist, 6 people earned PhD degree and 22 people earned master degree successfully so far.

Currently, there are 1 professor and 4 assistant professors in our department. One of our assistant professors has also been working as the Konya Provincial Health Director. We also have 9 research assistants.
