Panel: Let Us Halt Diabetes

“Let us halt diabetes” themed panel was hold in Ahmet Keleşoğlu Faculty of Education Erol Güngör Conference Hall on the occasion of November, 14 World Diabetes Day. Our Rector Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Şeker, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Tahir Yüksek, Dean of Meram Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özkağnıcı, Mufti of Konya City Şükrü Özbuğday, academicians, faculty personnel and a great number of citizens attended the panel.

Dean of Meram Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özkağnıcı made following statements: “Diabetes is a serious public health problem. From this point of view our region occupies the first rank. The cases we encounter are grave. If diabetes is not carefully overseen it may give rise to serious problems. Principally person should be his own doctor. Sugar is indispensable for life but we have to be careful. Let us protect ourselves against this illness which does not taste sweet as its name. I wish sugarless days for all of you.” 

Our Rector Muzaffer Şeker said: “In Turkey diabetes issue is a chronic illness that deserves high attention. In our country notable advancements were made on this issue. Among highly consumed three whites in our country’s cuisine exists sugar as well. We will be having problems in this sense as long as we don’t pay attention in this rich cuisine. I wish balanced sugar consumption for everybody. Recent years successful programmes have been carried out on the subject of healthy and conscious dieted nutrition of young generations. Especially there are these kinds of programmes under the leadership of Ministry of Health. These kinds of programmes have extreme importance on elevation of awareness of people. I would like to thank everybody who put effort in realization of these events which will contribute economy of our country and healthy human capital.”

After the opening speech, Vice Chairman of Turkey Diabetes Foundation Prof. Dr. Ahmet Kaya said: “Although Diabetes Day is November, 14 we celebrate it throughout the week. It is a unique illness. What we eat is important. Tell me what you ate I will tell you what you will become. It is inevitable to come across various illnesses in case of inadequate or excessive nutrition. Existence of one of these illnesses makes way to other illnesses. Nowadays, death ratio of by diabetes oriented increases while ratio of death caused by cardiovascular diseases and cancer decreases tends to decrease.” In the following part of his speech he talked about the definition of diabetes, countries where it is encountered frequently and rarely, reasons of diabetes and its condition in Turkey.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Feridun Karakurt other that giving information about treatment of diabetes, said: “Diabetes reveals itself with indications of dryness of the mouth and frequent peeing habit. Early diagnosis plays an important role in treatment of illness. One hour after meals it should be done exercises. Walks at medium speed will be very beneficial. Never take any herbal medicine without consulting your doctor.” Besides he made statements about subjects which are situations in which diabetes risk increases and the aim of treatment.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kulaksızoğlu said: “Diabetes is a vein disease. There isn’t any part of body which is not influenced from it. The chance of emergence of cardiac disease is twice as much of diabetes. There is 60% probability that anybody who lives in Turkey may experience complication. Its treatment is not difficult and patients play an important role in great part of treatment. Patients should be their own doctors. In our lives, regularly we have to spare time for exercises like hiking, swimming and biking.”
